Concerns about Garcia’s mental health persist in the wake of his erratic behavior and reckless use of social media since agreeing to fight Haney.

The two rivals have already fought six times as amateurs and won three fights each, but instead of engendering mutual respect, it has contributed to a growing contempt for each other.

During the press tour to promote their fight, Garcia’s parents accused Bill Haney, Devin’s father, trainer and manager, of being a “pimp.” Since then, Garcia’s social media activity has also offended the Haneys; Devin, like Garcia, 25, also previously expressed understandable concerns that his opponent would not make it to the ring.

The Haney’s were surrounded by their extravagant security detail at the face-off at the Empire State Building, which Garcia attended with only his parents and trainer Derrick James.

It was when Garcia was alone that Bill Haney began making the threats he repeated in an apparent attempt to avoid any possible misunderstanding, and repeated them again when Lisa, Garcia’s mother, arrived and could hear.

“I’ll send him to kill you,” Bill Haney said. “You disrespect the country; you disrespect the people; if you don’t respect religion, you will be sentenced and I will send my son to kill him.

“I don’t care what anyone says about him. If you don’t want to see him and you don’t want to see him, then don’t see him. It was suicide for him to sign up [to fight] and it will be murder on April 20, for all the disrespect.

It will be an annihilation. It won’t be a beating, it will be an annihilation. Like [Ivan] Drago said in Rocky: if he dies, he dies.”

“He disrespected boxing and he disrespected people. He disrespected the sport, and if he dies, he dies, just like Drago said. This is not a game. I’m going to send my son to kill him.”

The irony of Bill Haney accusing Garcia of “disrespecting” the sport apparently went over his head. “Mrs. Garcia, you can’t stop this now,” he continued when Lisa Garcia arrived. “It got real. It got real. It got real. It got real. Yes, it got real.
