The Lakers will get their chance to make an in-person pitch to Dan Hurley on Friday. One day after reports of the team’s interest in Hurley surfaced, the current UConn head coach will fly to Los Angeles to meet with vice president of basketball operations Rob Pelinka, owner Jeanie Buss and the team’s front office.
Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN reported the latest for the Lakers coaching search prior to Game 1 of the NBA Finals on Thursday.
After the game, Woj posted an article laying out much of the same, including the team’s eagerness to sign Hurley.
UConn coach Dan Hurley is traveling to Southern California for a Friday meeting with Los Angeles Lakers vice president of basketball operations Rob Pelinka and owner Jeanie Buss — with the organization eager to close on a deal to hire the two-time national championship coach, sources told ESPN on Thursday.
Notable as well from the article is the report that, while no decision has been made, things are trending in a certain direction with the two sides discussing a contract, which is certain to be a huge one.
The Lakers’ pursuit of Hurley to become the franchise’s next coach has accelerated and the sides are already discussing the contractual parameters of a potential deal that would be significant in its length and salary, sources said.
Hurley has not made a decision about exiting UConn for the NBA, but there is momentum in these discussions, sources said.
The Lakers have likely long pursued this meeting, given the report that they have viewed Hurley as their No. 1 target since the beginning of this process.
While this could be reading into something small, Woj’s wording and tone really make it sound like this is a legitimate possibility. If Hurley is flying to Los Angeles, there is certainly a strong possibility that this all happens.
There is no timeline for this decision, but both sides are motivated to move quickly. The Lakers have already dragged out the process of this coaching search for some time, and Hurley, if he wants the job, will want to get started right away. As a result, there’s a good chance this all moves pretty fast over the weekend.
This is not the Lakers’ first in-person meeting. They notably met with James Borrego in recent weeks. However, this is the biggest meeting they’ve had for the reasons mentioned above about this being their top target.
It will also be interesting to see if or how much LeBron James and Anthony Davis are included over the weekend. While LeBron has reportedly not talked to the Lakers about their coaching search, the team has involved AD in the process throughout. Will either or both be at the facility on Friday or over the weekend when Hurley is in attendance?
Without question, it’s going to be one of the bigger weekends the franchise has had in recent seasons.
