LeBron James, NBA players mourn Jerry West’s passing

Jerry West passed away at age 86 Wednesday, prompting an outpouring of support and mourning from the National Basketball Association community.

The man whose silhouette adorned the NBA logo seemed almost immortal at times, but the inevitable came to pass and West is being remembered as one a penultimate representative of what has become a global game and one of the most iconic sports leagues in the world.

The support came from all parts of the NBA community, including coaching legends Pat Riley and Phil Jackson.

The tributes continued fast and furiously as the NBA community continued its mourning process.

LeBron James continued the mourning process as he spoke about his “mentor” and “friend.”

“My mentor, my friend! Hopefully I continue to make you proud!” James said with a crying emoji. “You’re already missed!”

Young called it a “pleasure” to have met West.

“Was a pleasure to have met & get the opportunity to talk with THE LOGO multiple times!” Trae Young said. “One of the best guards ever & people! R.I.P. to a Legend!”

Miles McBride of the New York Knicks also shared a picture with the Los Angeles Lakers legend.

Rest in Peace to a Legend 🙏🏾

Howard, Batum add to West memorials
Former Los Angeles Lakers center Dwight Howard and longtime NBA forward Nicolas Batum were among those who added to the memorial theme.

“R.I.P. Jerry,” Howard said with a set of praying hands. “Legends Live On #lakeshow #legend.”

Lakers alumnus Kyle Kuzma, now with the Washington Wizards, shared a video of an embrace with West courtside at a game and a message.

Batum said he will “always be grateful” and shared a photo.

RIP Jerry West, I’ll be always grateful 🙏🏽 Prayers up

West brought six titles to the Lakers franchise in various managerial roles. He was a 14-time All-Star 1972 NBA MVP and won an NBA title that same season.

“The Logo. Damn. RIP Jerry,” longtime NBA sixth man Lou Williams wrote on his Twitter account with a heartbroken emoji.

Jae Crowder saved perhaps the most the most colorful message of all for the NBA legend. Jae Crowder never played for West’s favorite team, the Lakers, but he was a pest while playing them, leading the Phoenix Suns to a series win over James and the Lakers in 2021.

“THE WORD ‘DOG’ COMES UP ALOT…WELL I WAS A WOLF BC I USE(D) TO EAT DOGS.! -JERRY WEST #RIP.”
