The 15-year NBA veteran and rookie head coach made it clear that he couldn’t care less about proving anything to other people.

“That’s a valid question. I’ve certainly heard everything. It’s been an interesting six weeks or so, just in terms of being part of the engagement farming industry.

It’s been really interesting. However, I don’t have a good answer to your question because I really don’t give a f**k. I wanna coach the Lakers, the team, I don’t want to dispel anything. I want to be a great coach in the NBA, I wanna win championships, and I want my players to maximize their careers, that’s all I care about.”

Redick has a massive job ahead of him, as he enters the NBA with zero experience as a coach. We’ve seen similar NBA coaching stories from the likes of Jason Kidd and Steve Nash, so there’s a proven example for it to work (Kidd) or be a disaster (Nash).

The Lakers have internally compared the potential of Redick as a coach to the likes of Pat Riley and Erik Spoelstra, so there is a mountain of expectations on Redick, even if he’s a rookie head coach. There’s an expectation to win when you are the Lakers, especially with two generation-defining players like LeBron James and Anthony Davis on the roster.

JJ Redick retired as a 15-year NBA veteran, but before he even stepped away from the NBA, he was innovating as an active player with an NBA podcast. He set a blueprint that many NBA stars have since followed, including LeBron James when he started hosting a podcast last season alongside Redick.

Redick had become one of the most influential media figures in the NBA world through his podcasts and appearances on ESPN, but he’s made it clear that he will no longer be doing podcasts as an NBA head coach.

“For the time being, and hopefully it’s a very, very long time, I am excommunicated from the content space. There will be no podcasts. We’ll do something when I have a breather from what we have coming up, I’m gonna be drinking out of the fire hose for the next month, but at some points, we’ll just do something for the people that listened, we’ll have a small video. But I am done podcasting.”

Given the rich fanbase that Redick cultivated across the different shows he’s hosted in recent years, there will be a major void in basketball media without Redick’s podcast, ‘The Old Man And The Three.’ This would also spell the end for Redick and LeBron’s ‘Mind The Game’ podcast.

There’s not a single NBA podcaster who wouldn’t give everything they had built up to be an NBA coach, so it’s not surprising to see Redick be as comfortable with leaving the media world behind.
