Bronny James wears No.9 to honor a rapping legend.
In a post on his Instagram story, LeBron James revealed the latest update involving his son Bronny, who happens to be the newest member of the Los Angeles Lakers.
James revealed Bronny’s jersey number to millions of fans and explained the decision as a tribute to the late rapper, Juice Wrld.
Jarad Anthony Higgins, more widely known as ‘Juice Wrld’, was a popular American rapper who was known for tracks like ‘Lucid Dreams’, ‘Moonlight’, and ‘Wasted’. Over his four-year career, he won various accolades including Billboard’s Top New Artist at the Billboard Music Awards in 2019.
Even after his passing in December of 2019, he maintained a large fanbase of millions of people, and the James family is among them.
Last year, James even got himself tattooed with Juice Wrld’s iconic logo — a triple 9 going down behind his ears. Bronny is obviously a dedicated fan and holds the artist to an exceptionally high standard.
Regarding the relation between Juice and the number nine, the origin and meaning of the symbol were actually revealed by the rapper himself. In a previous interview, Juice Wrld once said that his signature ‘999’ logo is about flipping the negative (666) into something positive and persevering through the most difficult times.
Seemingly, Bronny wants to live by a similar code for his NBA career and it’s an admirable mentality to have. While Bronny may have some unique advantages working in his favor, that doesn’t mean the journey has been easy and he’s faced plenty of adversity on the path to success.
Before starting his freshman year at USC, James endured a cardiac arrest that gave his whole family a serious health scare. And despite his low averages at USC (4.8 points on 36% shooting) he managed to impress scouts with his maturity, work ethic, and natural charisma.
As the son of an NBA legend, Bronny is constantly under the spotlight and he faces added pressure with every decision he makes. The 19-year-old point guard has done a good job of handling things so far but the noise will not simmer down anytime soon.
The only way for Bronny to shut down the haters for good is to prove to the world that he belongs in the NBA and that his spot on the Lakers was earned, not given. Judging by his competitive spirit and exceptional work ethic, Bronny will be fighting hard to validate his place and there’s no reason to think he’s incapable of proving the doubters wrong.
