Jared Dudley, the assistant coach of the Dallas Mavericks, has taken a subtle dig at the newly appointed Lakers head coach, JJ Redick. Joey Mistretta interviewed the assistant coach, where he talked about Maverick’s future and his aspiration for his own future.

Mistretta posted a clip from the interview on X, formerly known as Twitter. In the video, Dudley shared that he wanted to eventually become a head coach one day and coach big teams in the league. Soon after, he took a sneak jab at Redick for his appointment as a non-experienced head coach.

“I wanna head coach. That’s my dream, ambition to be able to do that. But at the same time you can’t have that. Some of us aren’t JJ Redick and get to go right away,” Dudley said.

Dudley highlighted that some coaches like him have to put in four to five years into their careers as assistant coaches before they get their first break as head coaches. He ended the segment with a firm belief that his time to become a head coach would eventually come.

In the same post, Mistretta commented to clarify that Dudley did not mean any ill will against Redick for getting the great opportunity of being the coach of one of the biggest franchises in the league.

“Just to clarify, Dudley was not throwing shade at Redick. He was just making a point, but he is cool with Redick.”
JJ Redick’s appointment as the head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers had raised a lot of eyebrows as it is very uncommon for a big franchise like the Lakers to sign a person with zero coaching experience as the head coach of the team. Many fans speculated that LeBron James had a hand in Redick’s appointment on the job as they are podcast partners on the ‘Mind the Game’ podcast.

However, Redick came forward to disregard all the rumors and speculation in his first-ever press conference as a Lakers coach.

JJ Redick has bid goodbye to the podcasting space after he was appointed Lakers head coach. In a video uploaded on Redick’s YouTube channel yesterday, the Lakers coach delivers his final message for his fans on the ‘Old Man and the Three” podcast.

“I will be moving on to coach the Los Angeles Lakers. Three Four Two is alive and well. Three Four Two will continue to operate, I am going to have no involvement,” Redick said.

The former podcast host thanked everyone who supported him and the podcast and bought their merchandise. Redick revealed that his entire focus is now directed towards coaching the Lakers and making them best versions of themselves.
