Tyson Fury is gradually intensifying his preparations for a highly anticipated rematch against Oleksandr Usyk later this year.
After their first encounter in May, where Fury experienced his first professional loss in a gripping contest, the ‘Gypsy King’ is determined to reclaim his standing in the heavyweight division.
The initial fight saw both Fury and Usyk have their moments, but the Ukrainian ultimately edged out a split decision victory, notably taking control in a decisive ninth round.
The rematch, scheduled for December, will have three of the four major belts on the line. Usyk was required to relinquish the IBF title to facilitate the second bout, making this fight even more critical for both fighters. In preparation, Fury has enlisted the help of his long-time friend and former two-weight world champion, Billy Joe Saunders. Speaking to talkSPORT, Saunders revealed he has been invited to join Fury’s training camp to assist with his preparations.
“You’ve got to give him credit,” Saunders said, acknowledging Fury’s resilience despite speculation around the ninth round of the first fight. “He didn’t go down, and he was still on his feet fighting.”
Saunders expressed excitement about joining Fury’s camp, highlighting the importance of addressing gaps from the previous preparation. “There was stuff missing out of it that needs to be rectified this time,” Saunders noted, emphasizing the adjustments needed for Fury to regain his championship form.
Confident in Fury’s ability to turn the tables, Saunders predicted, “I believe Tyson will win the next fight. And I believe that he will win by knockout as well.” His optimism reflects the determination within Fury’s camp to correct the mistakes of their first bout and come back stronger.
As for Saunders, he has not stepped back into the ring since his own first professional loss to Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez in May 2021. While Saunders has often hinted at a comeback, he has yet to make his return to competitive boxing. However, his involvement in Fury’s camp signals a continued connection to the sport and a commitment to helping his friend prepare for what could be a career-defining rematch.
Fury’s commitment and the support from experienced allies like Saunders are crucial as he looks to regain his title and reaffirm his position at the top of the heavyweight division. The upcoming rematch with Usyk promises to be another electrifying chapter in heavyweight boxing, with both fighters eager to prove their supremacy.
