Oscar De La Hoya recently unleashed a scathing critique of both Floyd Mayweather and Canelo Alvarez in his weekly social media series, “Clap-back Thursdays.” The “Golden Boy” uses this platform to give his unfiltered opinions on the latest happenings in the boxing world, and this week was no exception.

De La Hoya began his tirade by addressing Floyd Mayweather’s recent exhibition rematch with John Gotti III, which took place over the weekend. The fight, a sequel to their chaotic first bout in June 2023 that ended in a mass brawl, was marked by equally bizarre incidents. During the rematch, Mayweather controversially dismissed the referee midway through the fight, replacing him because he disagreed with the official’s warnings about illegal punches.

De La Hoya didn’t hold back in his criticism, describing the event as a “real s*** show” that left the audience booing. He expressed frustration over Mayweather’s behavior, stating, “Floyd literally had the referee swapped out. He didn’t like that the referee told him to stop hitting behind the head. Floyd is used to getting away with whatever he wants, and he wasn’t getting away with it this time.”

Although Mayweather retired in 2017 with an unbeaten 50-0 record, he has since participated in numerous exhibition fights against a variety of opponents. De La Hoya suggested that these bouts are tarnishing Mayweather’s legacy, despite the financial gains. He implored Mayweather to consider the long-term impact on his reputation: “Floyd, you’re 50 years old, you’re a legend of the sport… but you have to stop embarrassing yourself with these exhibitions.”

De La Hoya also touched on Mayweather’s financial troubles, referencing a lawsuit filed by Mayweather’s jeweler in Miami and the rumors that he may need to liquidate assets to cover debts. Despite his harsh words, De La Hoya showed some sympathy, saying, “Floyd, I’m rooting for you. Come on, let’s turn it around.”

After addressing Mayweather, De La Hoya turned his attention to Canelo Alvarez, with whom he has had a contentious relationship since their promotional split in 2020. He criticized Canelo for avoiding the most challenging fights, suggesting that Saudi boxing promoter Turki Alalshikh is trying to bring back “real boxing” by organizing the best matchups.

De La Hoya mentioned that Canelo has resisted Alalshikh’s efforts, particularly after a proposed super fight with Terence Crawford fell through. He claimed that Alalshikh’s push for Canelo to face tougher opponents, like David Benavidez and Crawford, led to tension between them. In a blunt statement, De La Hoya said, “Canelo, f*** you.”

The fallout over the proposed fight with Crawford has added fuel to the fire. Alalshikh had made a lucrative offer for the fight, but communication breakdowns led to the deal falling apart. In a statement, Alalshikh accused Canelo of being reluctant to face formidable opponents like Crawford and Benavidez.

Through “Clap-back Thursdays,” De La Hoya has made it clear that he is unafraid to speak his mind about some of the biggest names in boxing, highlighting his dissatisfaction with the current state of the sport and those he feels are not upholding its standards.
