In the wake of Ryan Garcia’s B-sample testing positive for Ostarine, a banned substance, the California boxer argued that he had taken a tainted supplement.
Garcia’s legal team, confident in Ryan’s innocence and echoing the boxer’s public declarations,
believed that one of the supplements he consumed before the fight would be proven contaminated.
Unfortunately, the situation took a different turn, prompting Ryan’s father, Henry Garcia, to urge his son to control his drinking.
Throughout the ordeal, Garcia consistently maintained that he had no intention of cheating. UFC president Dana White supported Ryan Garcia’s stance, urging that “tainted supplements” be held accountable. White felt that Garcia’s team could have managed the situation better to demonstrate his innocence to the New York State Athletic Commission (NYSAC). Meanwhile, considering Garcia’s claims, the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association (VADA) issued a warning to athletes to be cautious about the dietary supplements they use.
Henry Garcia now believes his son should be more careful with his drinking habits. “I’m being real. What I’m seeing is that I would love for him to get some type of therapy when it comes to his drinking,” Henry Garcia stated. Despite asserting Ryan’s innocence, he questioned why they couldn’t convince the NYSAC of this.
“Ryan isn’t guilty, okay? His lawyers have to come up with something because if they went to trial, things might have gone worse or better. We don’t know,” said Henry Garcia.
“But we’re not going to waste time. We’d rather take the consequences for what they’re worth, pay what we have to—not because we’re guilty, but because we don’t want a prolonged court battle. We just want to move on and be ready in 10 months,” he added.
According to Henry Garcia, a one-year suspension and forfeiture of $1.2 million were more reasonable than fighting for justice, as a lengthy legal battle would be a waste of time. The Garcia family is already dealing with a lot, including Ryan’s mother, Lisa Garcia, undergoing cancer treatment. Henry Garcia mentioned to Fight Hub TV that he hasn’t been in touch with Ryan for a long time.
Henry Garcia Awaits “Bummed Out” Ryan Garcia’s Call
In addition to his mother’s ongoing treatment, Ryan Garcia has faced a tough time since the stigma of a positive test overshadowed his victory over Devin Haney. Amidst all this, Ryan has not contacted his father for a while. Henry Garcia remarked, “He’s out there. He’s being a 25-year-old. I know when I was 25, I wouldn’t call my parents until I needed them. So, I guess that’s the situation. He’ll call me when he needs me.”
When asked if it was hard to see Garcia go through so much at 25, Henry responded affirmatively. “He did say something to his mother. He said that he’s pretty bummed out about everyone attacking him and claiming he did something intentionally, which he didn’t. It was just a contamination of a supplement,” Henry Garcia added.
