The Los Angeles Lakers Have Selected Bronny James With The No. 55 Pick In The 2024 NBA Draft

The Lakers make history by creating the first father-son NBA duo.

Coming into the 2024 Draft, the Los Angeles Lakers were considering various names for their second-round draft pick.

But just as people had predicted, they settled on drafting Bronny James at 55 overall.

Bronny is the 19-year-old son of LeBron who is coming off a modest season at USC. He averaged 4.8 points per game for the Trojans this past season and shot just 36.6% from the field. Still, James showed flashes of greatness as a ball handler, defender, and playmaker.

Initially, there were doubts that Bronny would be drafted at all this year but after an impressive showing at the combine, he validated his status as one of the top 60 young prospects. Early indications suggest that he is likely to spend some time in the G-League, but Bronny could see real action soon if LeBron James is there to guide him.

LeBron, a 4x NBA champion, claims to have no role in draft-day decisions but it’s hard to believe that the Lakers drafted his son without some kind of grander vision in mind. If it gets him to re-sign this summer, it’ll be a massive win for the Lakers to make history as the first NBA franchise to employ a father and his son on the roster at the same time.

While much remains to be seen about the ongoing offseason, the Lakers are showing their loyalties with their latest set of moves. From hiring JJ Redick to drafting Bronny, they are clearly catering to the King, even if he didn’t ask them to.

For the Lakers’ sake, they better hope that it pays off with prosperous times on the court or things could get ugly for them very soon. At 39 years old, LeBron will not be playing forever and the Lakers need to set themselves up now if they want any hope of avoiding a major decline after he retires. For better or worse, Bronny is a part of their future now and they are counting on him to show everyone what he can do at his very best.
